The 2nd Annual “Who Are You?” Youth Media Festival:
A Reaction by Jennifer Abbott

Those who know Baltimore, are well aware of the city’s great potential. Much like the city itself, Baltimore’s youth have amazing potential in many areas, but unfortunately, it often goes unrecognized. But that is exactly what Wide Angle Youth Media is determined to change through its annual “Who Are You?” Youth Media Festival.

As a first time attendee of the “Who Are You?” Youth Media Festival, (now in its second year) I was immediately impressed by the level of youth participation— 44 schools and 11 after-school groups were represented. CENTERSTAGE hosted the Festival, and the stage level was completely filled, and there were even some people in the balcony!

For an hour after the doors opened and before the performance/video viewing portion began, I walked around the galleries and enjoyed youth artwork which included paintings, photographs, collages, and poems. As someone who never had much artistic ability, I was blown away by the obvious talent, commitment, and passion put into these works.

The performance and video part of the Festival was very interactive and fun. The excitement and enthusiasm was infectious as the room filled with cheers and encouragement from family and friends as the videos played and performers took the stage. Video diaries, poetry recitals and readings, videos about Baltimore neighborhood and school life, and even a musical group performance were just a few of the featured pieces of the Festival.

Wide Angle Youth Media understands that a city’s youth voice is central to its future. The Baltimore community came together on March 31st, temporarily forgetting about school and other rivalries for the purpose of celebrating youth media and art. My first experience at the Festival exceeded all of my expectations!
