A Letter from a Youth Producer

This is me at the summer Girls Speak Out! Program.
My name is Donasiah, and I am 14 years old. I have been a part of Wide Angle Youth Media for three years. I first heard of Wide Angle at the library — they were having a Media Workshop for middle school children called Baltimore Speaks Out! At first I didn’t want to join, but my mother insisted I do so.  She said I would learn very useful skills that I would appreciate one day.  I am very thankful that my mother made me go, because thanks to Wide Angle I have not only learned many new skills, but I have also gone to places like the Baltimore Museum of Art and the City Police Headquarters, and I have met many interesting people.  Doing these things helped me learn how to present myself at events, how to interact with people I don’t know, and has helped me become more confident.

I got to interview Wide Angle Board Member Nikki Verdecchia at On The Set.

During my first two years at Wide Angle my mentor was Ms. Charday Hall. She helped me to overcome my shyness.  The first time she helped me was when I started crying because I had to read a poem I had done, and it was too much for me to stand up in front of the class. She allowed me to have what we call “bubble space,” which is basically a personal time-out, and afterwards she encouraged me daily. I must say Ms. Charday is my favorite mentor because she helped me overcome so much.

Every year I try to get involved in as many Wide Angle programs as I can.  Now that I am in high school I have joined their Mentoring Video Program, MVP for short.  I come back every year because of the different opportunities we are offered, and the fact that this is a place where Baltimore youth are given a chance to voice their opinions and share their feelings about both everyday things and important matters like education, gangs, and the environment. Besides media skills we learn leadership, teambuilding, public speaking, problem-solving, and how to work with diverse sorts of people. These things are very valuable even if our future career isn’t in media. Wide Angle helps us learn important LIFE skills!

Wide Angle is a Non-Profit Organization - in other words we depend on the donations from people like you to exist.  The money we receive is used for equipment, snacks, transportation, and the rest of our necessities. So I kindly ask if would make a generous donation to help us better our programs. We would really appreciate it, and you would be helping many children such as myself to have a wonderful experience.

Sincerely,

Donasiah Clapperton, MVP Youth Producer
