Our inspiring high school photo exhibit will be on view at Red Emma's! These portraits were created by students in Wide Angle Youth Media's fall and spring high school photography class taught by Sydney Allen. Students explored new approaches to Portraiture as a response to an overall generational desire to be less looked at, but still wanting to be visible. The photos presented are a result of students' examination of how to make portraits without using the face or facial identifiers.

This year Wide Angle's theme for MediaWorks chosen by students is “Stigma and Stereotypes.” Keeping in mind the ways that these stereotypes are perpetuated in not just media, but spread to other issues in the local community, students spent five weeks researching and creating media surrounding this topic. Wide Angle's virtual closing event, Breaking Barriers: Getting at the Heart of Stigma & Stereotypes, was created by MediaWorks student planners to showcase what they've learned and created over the past few weeks.

Wide Angle’s high schoolers and our seniors, in particular, have continued to work on personal and group creative projects, using the opportunity to develop their artistic skills, uplift local organizations, and even engage their community through a virtual prom earlier this spring. We are so excited to celebrate their talents and send them off with the help of area creatives and change-makers. COVID-19 has disrupted many aspects of the normal high school experience, but all of our students, and our class of 2021, have risen to the occasion!

For our students, virtual prom is more than a dance. It's a platform to share their Covid-19 experience, re-envision a rite of passage, and imagine a better future. While they plan, they are also building a movement to focus on issues such as child abuse, mental health, and essential workers.
Join us for a virtual prom on Saturday, May 9, 7-11 PM. This is available for all Baltimore City Public School students that are current Juniors or Seniors. We can only host 800, so make sure you get your ticket fast! While prom tickets are reserved for high schoolers, everyone is invited to partake in the festivities by tuning in for the livestream on this webpage or on our Facebook.
