Media Works Summer Program

MediaWorks is Wide Angle’s summer workforce development initiative for 46 youth. The program provides paid media education experiences in partnership with Baltimore City’s YouthWorks. During MediaWorks, youth participate in our Build Your Brand initiative. This initiative was launched in summer 2018, after students spent a year learning and creating media around the youth-selected theme, “Why Black Lives Matter”. They learned about their community and the world around them, and expressed a desire to work on media projects to create change. In response, Wide Angle revamped MediaWorks to reflect their vision. Build Your Brand provides students with workforce readiness skills, as they apply their media skills to create design, photography and video campaigns to uplift the mission of organizations and businesses that do good in the community. In summer, 2018, Black Girls Cook, Black Sauce, and Strength 2 Love 2 Farm, were our student-selected clients to inaugurate the program.

In our first year, we had 20 applicants in response to the Build Your Brand RFP. In our second year, Build Your Brand grew in popularity, and our students had to narrow down 54 applications. Our 2019 clients are My Law, Black Women Build and Strong Schools Maryland!

Because of limited availability, MediaWorks is only open to young people currently engaged in another Wide Angle program, or placed directly with Wide Angle through the YouthWorks program.
